December is the festive season. Christmas marks the birth of our Savior. It is the season to forget all differences and love and affection reign supreme among family, friends and society. It is the time to give and receive.
It is marked by Santa Claus, gifts and carols. For children the season is the most enjoyable and pleasant one. They expect gifts from Santa Claus. Every home prepares itself for Christmas from mid-December and the houses are decorated with various pleasant things.
It is the season for bells, candles, cakes, wine, candy canes, reindeer, stars, stockings, wreaths and Yule log.
The Christmas tree plays an important role in such decorations. It marks the life of Christ and also the Tree of Life. With its star on top and angels hovering over it, it becomes a welcome sign for the coming of Christ. It is also a landmark for Santa Claus to visit. The well-lit Christmas tree is the beloved symbol of the festive season and of the Gospel and ever-radiating love of the savior of Man.
It has become a habit of the American Christians to decorate their houses with the Christmas tree bedecked with sparkling lights along with stars, angels and presents. A pleasant, lovely and friendly atmosphere is created in the homes of American Christians with flowers, garlands and balloons.
Present day living conditions make the use of natural pines and firs for decoration a difficult one. The people living in large cities find it impossible to use natural greenery to decorate their houses. Natural greenery creates problems and most of them lose their luster as days pass on. They may also shed their needles and make daily cleaning a necessary chore of their maintenance, not to say anything about the difficulty of their disposal at the end of the season.
