We are very excited today at Artificial Plants and Trees. Our products were used for a segment on the TV show called "The Doctors". We provided outdoor topiary trees, hedges, plants and flowers for the show to use in the segment. The segment was about a woman who is learning to manage her life with Macular Degeneration. The TV show remodeled her back yard to make it a safe haven for her family. They wanted to create an environment that she could enjoy without a lot of ongoing daily up keep. They also wanted to create an environment that was safe for her to walk around and not be scared she may fall. We donated the products to the show so she could have a touch of color in her life and still enjoy trees and plants without the constant watering and care. Areca Palm Trees, a.k.a. Feather A palm that prefers high light but no direct sun, Areca palms (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) have lots of upright fronds with rich green color and yellow stems. They grow as clumps and tend to stay full. While they can outgrow most homes, with judicious pruning of the tallest fronds, they make great indoor plants. Keep evenly moist in the spring and summer and slightly drier during fall and winter.

Fishtail Palm Trees have flat fronds that split at the tips like a fish tail. All are large plants that require strong light. Caryota mitis, clustered fishtail, is a little difficult to grow unless you have a well-lighted, humid environment and keep the fronds free of dust. Keep fishtail palms evenly moist, mist several times a week and provide bright light.

Coconut Palm Trees Truly an unusual indoor palm, Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) send up bold, broad leaves from a coconut planted halfway in the soil. They never seem to have many leaves at one time, but will eventually develop trunks. They need lots of light, cannot tolerate too much water or poorly drained soil and prefer high humidity and warm temperatures. There is another plant called a dwarf coconut palm (Microcoelum), but it is only a distant relative, doesn’t grow from a coconut and doesn’t produce coconuts! It almost looks like a miniature Areca with wispy, open foliage.

Majesty One of the most graceful palms, Ravenea rivularis ‘Majesty’ has a classic upright form with a central trunk and large fronds. This is a variety that prefers high light. If needed, supply supplemental artificial light. It is tolerant of average indoor humidity and temperatures but will be more lush if it is warmer and more humid. Majesty palms have an extensive root system and should be kept evenly moist.

Kentia Palm Trees, a.k.a. Sentry Talk about a slow grower! Kentia palms (Howea fosteriana) only produce one new spike that unfurls into a frond each year. To make it look fuller, several are planted in each pot. It is tolerant of most indoor situations and is commonly used in offices and malls. It does perfectly well in moderate to high light and will stay healthy if misted frequently. Neantha bella (growing to about 3 feet) and Kentia (growing up to 12 feet at a snail’s pace) are often confused for one another.

Parlor Palm Trees This is a group of palms with feathery foliage, usually growing in a cluster. They are the easiest of all palms to grow. Chamaedorea elegans is the parlor palm often called Neanthe bella. It grows to 3-4 feet tall with long fronds, needs lots of light (but not direct afternoon sun in summer) and likes humidity but will tolerate moderately dry air. Another great member of the family is C. seifrizii, commonly called a Bamboo or Reed palm. It has smooth green trunks with markings that resemble bamboo canes. It can grow from 3-12 feet tall and has a narrow habit. This plant tends to be more open in appearance and tolerates a wide range of light levels and humidity.

Lady Palm Trees, These palms look much like clumps of bamboo. There are several types of Lady palms. Rhapis excelsa is the common lady palm, growing to about 12 feet. R. humilis is the slender lady palm or rattan palm. It can grows to about 18 feet. Lady palms have deep green foliage and develop trunks with coarse, dark coverings. Both varieties are tolerant of medium light levels. Keep them evenly moist in summer and allow them to dry slightly in winter. They like lots of humidity, especially in the summer.

Phoenix Palm Trees, commonly called date palms, there are several varieties. Phoenix roebelenii is the Pygmy date palm, growing only about 2 feet tall and, unlike other Phoenix palms, does not have sharp-edged fronds. P. dactylifera is the true date palm and can get to be a huge tree. Since it is very slow growing, young specimens are used indoors in large spaces. P. canariensis is the Canary Island date palm that grows slowly to a maximum height of 15 feet. All Phoenix palms tolerate average indoor temperatures and humidity and like to dry slightly between waterings. They need lots of light, but cannot tolerate the direct afternoon sun. Of the three, the Canary Island palm will survive with the least light.

Chinese Palm Trees- There are several fan palms but the most successfully grown as indoor plants are Chamaerops humilis (European fan palm) and Livistona chinensis (Chinese fan palm.) Both have fronds shaped like large, deeply dissected fans. As new leaves develop, lower fans die revealing an interesting trunk. European fan palms typically grow to about 4 feet indoors, need lots of light and average humidity. Chinese fans palms grow from 3-6 feet, can tolerate average to bright light and average humidity. Keep them cooler during the winter months. Their leaves will need to be cleaned occasionally with a soft cloth.

Sago or Cycas Palm Trees If you want to grow a part of history, grow these palms. Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) were a major source of food for vegetarian dinosaurs. The leaves are dark, glossy, stiff, coarse fans emerging from a central knobby brown core. As they mature, they form a trunk. They like lots of light but not direct afternoon sun in the summer. Sago palms need excellent drainage, high humidity and should be kept moderately moist.

Ponytail Palm Trees, a.k.a. Elephant Foot This one isn’t really a palm. It is a succulent (Beaucarnea) with palm-like foliage. It grows from a large swelling at the base of the stem which serves as a reservoir for water. Ponytails make good indoor plants but can outgrow their situation. They like it warm, tolerate dry soil and like to dry out between waterings.

Maple Trees

Maple trees have long been valued by landscaping enthusiasts because of their exceptional fall foliage colors. However, not all maple trees are made equally and some are more suited for decorative purposes while others are more appropriately used as shade-trees. There are six main varieties of maple trees: Paperbark maples, Silver maples, Sugar maples, Norway maples, Red maples and Japanese maples.

While their fall foliage is stunning, maples tend to be very large trees, often achieving heights of over 120 feet depending on the species. For this reason, artificial maple trees are generally not very popular. Smaller versions of the mature trees can be custom built but these artificial maple trees tend to be quite costly to manufacture. Orders are consequently rare. An exception to this is the artificial Japanese maple tree.

Japanese maple is, by far, one of the most popular maple trees. Japanese maple trees are beautiful plants well known for their exceptional fall foliage. In fact, their popular classification into ‘Red’, ‘Bloodgood’, ‘Crimson Queen’ and ‘Cutleaf Green’ varieties is based on their foliage colors during the fall season. As the name indicates, the leaves of the ‘Red’ variety are red during the summer months and brighten as fall approaches. The well-liked ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple has foliage that is closer to reddish-purple and turns to an outstanding crimson during the fall. Similarly, the ‘Crimson’ variety also displays a comparable color for the fall season but the leaves are dark red during summer. In contrast, the foliage of the ‘Cutleaf Green’ Japanese maple is green in summer but turns to a striking gold during the fall season.

As with their natural relatives, artificial Japanese maple trees come in a variety of colors, from green to burgundy and rust orange. Typically, the lower half of the Japanese maple tree consists of a long, thin trunk. This is topped by dense, narrow foliage. These trees are ideal in office settings, where they are usually placed in room corners, but the brighter colors are quite popular in homes. Artificial Japanese maple trees normally range in size from 40 inches to 96 inches. Small green samples are available for around $60 while the taller, more brightly colored, specimens have cost $300 or more.

The main advantage of using artificial maple trees is the retention of color. Larger plants are usually chosen for their brilliant displays. Their leaves are often treated so that fading as a result of sun damage is minimized. In addition, natural Japanese maple trees are seasonal. Their colors typically change from summer to fall. This is not a problem with Japanese maple trees as they will keep the desired color. Since they are made of synthetic material, the risk of insect damage is also negligible. Maintenance of silk japanese maple trees is at a minimum although, as with any surface, they would need to be dusted once a year.

Floral Greenery

Greenery is generally used to describe the foliage of a plant, whether it is live or artificial. This may follow a literal interpretation and be taken to mean only green foliage. However, variegated foliage with other colors, inclusive of green, can be included in this definition. There is a large variety of silk greenery in existence today. They usually fall into the categories of hanging bushes, silk ferns, ivy bushes, ivy bushes, and silk garlands and swags.

Silk bushes are a form of low maintenance floral greenery. They are an excellent and cost effective way of adding a tropical look and feel to your office or home decor. This type of silk greenery is typically sold as either potted or hanging specimens.

Popular silk bushes include English ivy bushes, Geranium bushes, Maple ivy bushes, Coleus bushes, Mixed ivy bushes and Holland ivy bushes. The appearance of this greenery can be enhanced by decorative baskets and planters.

Two of the more popular potted silk plants are the English ivy and the Coleus. Both of these Silk greenery are prized for their departure from the typical green foliage. The leaves of the English ivy are a greenish brown and a potted plant with 108 leaves can be obtained around $25. The Coleus has beautiful reddish green leaves and a plant of comparable size.

The English ivy also enjoys a high demand as a hanging silk bush. Its delightful coloration enhances the natural beauty of any living space. This fake greenery is quite affordable with a 36 inch specimen retailing at just around $15.

Sage Ivy is also very fashionable today and is typically made from polyester, synthetics and iron wire. These hanging silk bushes are very high quality and add a natural looking touch of healthy greenery to any decor. A 31 inch specimen with 320 leaves each retails at very low rates.

Silk ferns are also a wonderful way to bring the tropics indoors using fake greenery. There are many varieties and the price is normally dependent on the complexity of the leaves. A Mountain fern with 40 leaves is good in the center of one’s drawing room. However, these leaves tend to be simple. A more intricate specimen, with 24 leaves can also be obtained.

One of the easiest, and cheapest, ways to incorporate fake greenery in any area is to use silk garlands and swags. These display realistic leaves and vines that will brighten any room. Typical silk garlands include the English ivy garland, pothos garland, silk rose garland, frosted grape garland and the nepthythis ivy garland.
